When can a teacher be dismissed from the service?

Teachers can only be dismissed by showing of course. This means that evidence must be provided specifying the charges against the teacher. The teacher must also be provided with a meaningful hearing.

Can I report someone for a pay gap?

The gender pay gap is an equality measure that shows the difference in average earnings between women and men. Undoubtedly a much higher proportion of women work that work part-time earn less than their full-time male counterparts on average.

However, the government is taking action by:

  • Encouraging girls to consider a wider range of careers, including in those higher paying sectors traditionally dominated by men.
  • Requiring large employers, including the public sector to publish their gender pay gap and gender bonus gap.

What is unfair dismissal?

An unfair dismissal is when your employment contract is terminated, and your employer did not have a fair reason to do so. It can also be claimed if your employer did have a fair reason but handled your dismissal using the wrong procedure.

If a tribunal finds that an employee has been unfairly dismissed, you might be ordered to:

  • Reinstate them
  • Re-engage them (re-employ them in a different job)
  • You might also have to pay compensation, which depends on the employee’s: age, gross weekly pay and length of service.

Even if you’ve acted reasonably, some reasons for dismissal are classed automatically unfair. Such as: pregnancy, family (including parental leave), acting as a trade union representative and being a part-time or fixed-term employee.
